Integrated Mosquito Management Program

Protecting Our Community

The City of Worland works hard every summer to keep mosquito numbers low. We do not just spray for flying bugs. We use a clear plan to stop mosquitoes before they hatch and keep our parks, yards, and streets pleasant for everyone.

How Our Program Works

We target mosquitoes at different stages of their lives using several methods:

1. Stopping Eggs

We place treatments into standing water. Altosid XR stops young mosquitoes from growing wings and becoming biting adults.

2. Night Spraying

We drive trucks that spray a very fine mist Perm-X UL 4-4 kills adult flying mosquitoes in the air when mosquito numbers increase.

3. Helping Neighbors

We share easy tips with property owners. Education & Tips helps everyone get rid of mosquito breeding spots at home.

Products We Use

Products that target mosquitoes:

  • Altosid XR (Larvicide): These are small briquettes or granules placed in standing water. They slowly release a growth control product that prevents mosquito larvae from turning into biting adults.

  • Perm-X UL 4-4 (Adulticide): This is a low-volume liquid spray misted from city trucks. It breaks down quickly in natural sunlight and targets flying mosquitoes on contact.

Spraying Schedule & Weather Guidelines

Nighttime spraying happens during late evening or early morning hours when adult mosquitoes are most active.

Weekly Spray Schedule

  • Standard Spraying Days: Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday

  • Backup Spraying Days: Monday and Wednesday (used if weather delays standard spraying)

Weather Delays: We delay spray on any scheduled night if:

  • Wind speeds are over 10 mph

  • Temperatures drop below 50°F or over 98°F

  • It is raining or foggy

"Fight the Bite": How You Can Help

City crews take care of public spaces, but mosquitoes love small spots of water in backyards. You can protect your home with these simple steps:

1. Dump Out Standing Water

  • Empty containers once a week: Check plant pots, buckets, birdbaths, pet dishes, and old tires.

  • Clean rain gutters: Clear out leaves so rainwater drains away quickly.

  • Cover rain barrels: Keep lids tight so bugs cannot fly inside to lay eggs.

2. Protect Yourself from Bites

  • Use Bug Spray: Wear EPA-registered bug spray (look for DEET or Picaridin on the label).

  • Watch the Time: Be extra careful at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes bite the most.

  • Fix Door and Window Screens: Make sure your screens fit tightly and do not have holes.
